The Cactus Challenge
Welcome
to the
Fifth Annual
Cactus Challenge
September 27th and 28th, 2002
We at the Ale-ian Society are excited to be hosting Cactus Challenge 2002, the premier homebrew competition of the South Plains, featuring West Texas hospitality, sunny days and starry nights, and, of course, the best intergalactic homebrew on the planet! Already marking its fifth year, the Cactus Challenge is a fast-growing, dynamic, exciting competition unequaled anywhere in the vast territory between the Rio Grande and the Brazos rivers. Last year was our best year yet, with over 180 great beers entered. With your help, this year will be even better!a
Unusual twists include our signature "most unusual ingredient" category, past winners of which include Bryan Yeargain’s inimical “quinine” beer, and Diana Theall’s inspired “cinnamon toothpick” brew. Who knows what’s in store for this year’s judges? Whether or not you choose to enter the “most unusual ingredient” category, we invite you to join in the fun by attending the Cactus Challenge and entering your homebrews in whatever categories suit your fancy. From connoisseur, to aficionados, to novice, we welcome all homebrewers, so please accept our invitation to compete and/or participate in the judging, or to simply attend our competition, share your expertise, or learn a thing or two new about homebrewing, all as you sample some of the finest.
Each year after the judging we sponsor a pub-crawl, a Tex-Mex dinner at Lubbock’s own Hub City Brewery, and an awards ceremony. The night will also feature raffles of beer-related paraphernalia, great Ale-ian homebrew, sparkling (depending on your level of inebriation) conversation, incredible homebrew networking opportunities, and, of course, recognition of brewing talent, highlighted by the presentation of the Cactus Challenge Best of Show Belt Buckle.
The Cactus Challenge is a quality competition, and will adhere to all American Homebrew Association guidelines and categories. Above all, the Ale-ian Society wants to share with you some good times and great homebrew. Check out the rest of our web site for more information, and for maps to the competition site.
See you there!
